Celebrating 5 years of The Global Indian Platform

The idea of The Global Indian was born in California in 2000.

It took 21 years — from the idea in 2000 to the launch of the platform in March 2021 — and nearly 4,000 stories for it to become what it is today.

Back then, I sensed a shift. Indians everywhere were stepping forward with new confidence — in technology, business, science, academia, and entrepreneurship. A community that had long worked quietly was finally being recognised on the global stage.

I was searching for a phrase that could capture this new energy and aspiration.
The words that came to mind were “Global Indian.”

Like many entrepreneurs living through the dot-com era, every good idea felt incomplete without a domain name — so I registered globalindian.com

Then the idea waited.

For nearly two decades, it quietly marinated.

The Global Indian has grown into a living archive of the Indian diaspora — from pioneers like Kanwal Rekhi to young innovators like Gitanjali Rao, and thousands of inspiring journeys across the world.

Along the way, the journey also led to a book, a TEDx talk, and a growing global community that believes in the idea.

My sincere thanks to the writers, editors, researchers, and team members who have worked tirelessly to bring these stories to life.

And above all, thank you to the Global Indians who generously gave their time to be interviewed and featured. Your journeys are what give this platform its meaning.

I want The Global Indian to become the permanent digital archive of the Indian diaspora — a place where journeys like yours will be preserved for generations to come.

Come, tell your story on The Global Indian. The world deserves to know your journey.
