I walked into a memorabilia store in search of a kendama, a traditional Japanese toy.

When the store assistant sensed my genuine interest, she enthusiastically demonstrated and described all the attributes of the humble kendama. Her contagious enthusiasm soon had me eagerly testing my own skills with the toy.

The lesson for salespersons and businesses is clear: enthusiasm and product knowledge can greatly influence a customer’s decision to buy.

By the end of it, I had bought two of them. With that kind of enthusiasm, who could say no?
